TURFGRASS DISEASE

Turfgrass diseases are generally caused by soil dwelling fungi.
These fungi are normally held in check via the competition of beneficial fungi and microorganisms.
The disease becomes apparent when ‘conditions’ become favorable. Environmental conditions for a disease to flourish varies with each disease.
Incorrect management, such as improper watering & cutting practises, often promote the development of disease.

Diseases can be control by:

  1. Modifying cultural practices - change watering and mowing methods
  2. Introducing new disease resistant turfgrass cultivars with overseeding.
  3. Managing thatch development and soil compaction with core aeration.
  4. Topdressing applications to introduce competing beneficial microbes.
  5. Application of disease control products (fungicides)

Symptoms

Disease symptoms vary, but there are several general symptoms associated with disease in a lawn. Here are a few things to look for if you suspect a disease problem in your lawn.

  • Is the problem occurring on one type of grass? Most home lawns have more than one species of grass and disease often attacks particular turfgrass species within a lawn.
  • Are there lesions on the leaves. Lesions are points of infection and are can be associated with a disease.
  • Are there any mycelium present? Mycelium are the tiny threads, like you might see in moldy bread. The mycelium may be present on the leaves or found in the soil.
  • Are there patterns of sick grass? Rings, patches, spots? Disease in turfgrass often occurs in patterns within the lawn.
