Nutri-Lawn follows the
principles of Integrated Pest Management when dealing with weed infestations.
The foundation of our approach is to create a healthy and competitive
stand of turfgrass that is capable of out-competing weeds and tolerating
minor insect feeding. This is a corner stone to delivering Ecology Friendly
Lawn Care. Focus is placed on the environmental conditions that the turfgrass
grows in.
- Ensure proper soil fertility, aeration,
and soil pH. Without good
soil your lawn will not compete well with weeds. Nutri-Lawn
programs are designed to encourage healthy soil for your
landscape.
- Water
your lawn properly. This is also critical if
you hope to maintain a thick, beautiful lawn. Over
watering or under watering of a lawn can lead to weed
infestation.
- Mow at the right height. Unless
you have a bentgrass lawn, your mowing height should
be up at 2” to
2.5”. Mowing too
short can encourage weed infestations. Learn more
- Mow once a week. Rule
of thumb is not to remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade. Scalping
a lawn by cutting too short, or waiting too long between cuts
and then cutting short can set back a lawn for weeks. Learn
more
- Annual aeration with an overseeding or slitseeding will introduce new vigorous
cultivars of turfgrass and help keep the lawn thick so weeds are
crowded out. Learn
more
- Apply Organic Plus Topdressing to add nutrients,
and organic matter to your soil, without the fear
of weed seed. Other topdressings can be full of nasty weed seeds. Learn
more
- Consider hand-pulling the weeds. Two
people and a couple good weed pullers can go a long way. Think of
it as good exercise. After hand-picking, it is strongly recommended
to overseed the bare soil areas left from pulling the weeds and apply
a starter fertilizer. This will help stop weed seeds from getting
established in these spots.
Hand picking weeds to establish weed
control will only address the present weed problem, but does
not address the source of the problem. Simply
handweeding does not prevent
or discourage new weeds from getting established. Hand-picking should
be considered as simply one part of the whole approach, which includes
regular feedings, aeration and overseeding.
- Follow the principals of IPM. If
hand-pulling is not an option, then consider using our
IPM (Integrated Pest Management)
programs that are
designed to control pests using a multitude of approaches,
including the responsible and professional use of pesticides.
We strongly recommend that you use a professional,
licensed service like Nutri-Lawn, when dealing with
pesticides.
Regarding Weed Control With Herbicides
A broad leaf weed herbicide application, if done properly,
is very effective, fast acting, and affordable. We followed
the principals of IPM and use technology that allows
us to spot treat weeds efficiently. This means a significant
reduction in pesticide used.
The need for follow-up applications
will be determined by weed type (more tenacious weeds will require
multiple applications), and the general condition and health of
the turf.
We discourage the "weed control only" applications
because weeds are often a symptom of poor soil conditions,
and if the soil compaction, fertility, or watering
are not being managed properly, then weeds will simply return.
Applying a "pre-emergent" control
will not control existing weeds. They inhibit future weed germination.
Pre-emergents are often used to control crabgrass. The pre-emergent
herbicides must be applied before the weed seeds germinate. They
only work for a limited time period of approximately 45 to 60 days,
with variable results, based on environmental conditions.

For Those Who
Do Not Want to Use Synthetic Herbicides
Nutri-Lawn's Organics
Plus program utilizes all the basic principals of IPM, without using
any synthetic pesticides.
It's based on a sound fertility program using organic and organic
based fertilizers, as well as a tool box of other natural/organic
products like beet extract, corn gluten, kelp extract, and our Organics
Plus Topdressing. Learn

No synthetic pesticides are used to ensure peace of mind for you
and your family.
